CONFERENCE AND FESTIVAL, LIMERICK, IRELAND
22ND -25TH OCTOBER 2014
'Locating The Gothic' is the brainchild of Maria Beville (Mary Immaculate College, UL) and Tracy Fahey (Limerick School of Art and Design, LIT) who first met, aptly, at the Studies in Gothic Fiction conference in San Diego in 2012. Both were fascinated at the idea of relating their own research in the Gothic to the historic, cultural and idiosyncratic location of Limerick city, where they live and work.
'Locating the Gothic', which arose from their plans, is an international conference and series of interlinked events exploring the concept of Gothic locations. Apart from initiating academic considerations of the Gothic and place, it celebrates the city of Limerick itself as a Gothic location. With its fascinating, bloody, and Gothic mix of history, literature, art, and folklore, Limerick enlivens the Gothic imagination with native narratives that encompass tales of battles and sieges, river monsters, ghosts, cannibalism and a long-standing city-curse.
The programme includes not only a two-day international conference for academic delegates, but also a diverse mix of cultural, social and artistic events which are open to the public. It links the campuses of Mary Immaculate College and Limerick School of Art and Design with other key historic sites throughout the city and county.
